The most common causes of dandruff are:

1. Dry Scalp

Dry skin is usually caused as a result of a cold climate. If your scalp is dry, you will get those flakes. Dryness can also cause itching. Flakes from dry scalp are usually small and less oily.

2. Oily Scalp

Dry scalp can give you dandruff, but so does oily scalp. Too much oil in the hair is one of the many causes of dandruff.

3. Reaction to Some Hair Products

It is also possible that the dandruff is as a result of your scalp’s reaction to some ingredients in some of the hair products you use. For example, if you are someone with hair prone to dandruff, using alkaline shampoos can result in dandruff. Opt for neutral or slightly acidic pH shampoo instead. Hair creams and products that contain too much oil are also known causes of dandruff. So do styling products.

4. Heat and Sweats

When there is heat, you sweat. The sweats mix with oil in your hair and that results in dandruff. It gets worse when your hair is dirty.

5. You don’t wash your hair enough

When you don’t shampoo as often as you should, there is a buildup of oils, dead skin, and dirt. Dandruff is formed as a result.

6. You wash too much

Don’t be surprised that washing too much also causes dandruff. Too much of everything is not good, and so is too less of everything. Washing your hair too often causes your scalp to lose its oil and become dry. Dry scalp leads to dandruff.

7. You don’t Comb your hair enough

Combing your hair is one easy way of getting rid of dead skin that may have built up at the roots of the hair. When you don’t comb well or as often as you should, the dead skins remain right where they are and create dandruff.

8. Stress

Stress weakens every cell in your body; your immune system is affected. And because of that, the malassezia that is already present in your hair is strengthened and dandruff is formed.

9. Wacky Diet

Not taking enough nutrients needed by your hair for healthy growth will result in dandruff.
