EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHILDREN’S HAIR AND SKIN:
• Children
1. Skincare
2. Haircare
3. Product recommendations for children
In our last article, we talked about all there is concerning babies skin and hair care.
Children of 5-13 years are more mature and their body is more developed than that of a 2 or 3 year old. This doesn’t mean you don’t need to be extra careful about what comes in contact with their skin as well. In this segment, I will highlight:
• Good skincare ingredients for kids
• Bad skincare ingredients
• Product recommendations
• To lighten or not ? The big question
When it comes to good skincare ingredients, basically everything that is good for a baby is good for children of 4-13. Since older kids are more developed, you can however use products with fragrance on them but it should be mild. Every other ingredient on the bad list is bad for them as well.

But some parents will insist so here’s a list of natural ingredients to lighten your children:

The two questions of note under haircare is:
• At what age should you perm a child’s hair.
• At what age should you dye your child’s hair
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD YOU PERM/ RELAX YOUR CHILD’S HAIR
After extensive research, I found out that perming your child’s hair before puberty can damage their hair, scalp and the skin near their temples. As a rule of thumb, wait till they’re at least 16. Why?
A child’s hair is weak and most relaxers contain sodium hydroxide also known as lye which can cause damages. Most kid’s relaxers indicate “No-Lye” but then they use “calcium hydroxide” which is harsh especially to your child’s hair since they dry out the hair.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD YOU DYE YOUR CHILD’S HAIR
Any child between the ages of 18 months to 12 years is a no go area for dyes. Dye is one bad skin and haircare ingredients. When used in hair it can cause itchy scalp, tears on the skin, hair loss, etc.
The truth is, any damage caused to a child’s hair or skin will be their problem to carry in adulthood so if you must, use safe temporary dyes and keep it around the tip of the hair.
