Blackheads are comedones that are open at the surface of the skin. They are filled with excess oil and dead skin cells. A comedone is a hair follicle that has become clogged with oil and dead skin cells that develop into blackheads and whiteheads. The surface of blackheads are usually black hence the name. This black hue is caused by irregular reflection of light coming from clogged hair follicles. Blackheads can be found on the face but they can also appear on other parts like:

Blackheads are tempting to pinch but this can cause unnecessary scaring. Instead, take the following steps to get rid of blackheads:

CLEANSE WITH A SALICYLIC ACID CLEANSER

Salicylic acid is preferred for blackheads because it breaks down excess oil and dead skin cells, the materials that clog your pores. It also helps remove dirt, oil and makeup. Use your salicylic acid cleanser once daily (preferably at night). You still need to cleanse twice so your salicylic acid cleanser can be an addition to your regular cleanser (you can use this every morning). EXFOLIATE

Exfoliating is a great way to get rid of dirt and dead skin cells that could clog the pores. Instead of using physical exfoliators (like scrubs), you should go for chemical exfoliants (your AHAs and BHAs). Chemical exfoliation will help improve the appearance of wrinkles and age spots while cleansing pores.

GO FOR RETINOIDS

Retinoid may be useful for stubborn cases of acne. It helps unclog pores. It also helps other products sink into your skin.

AVOID COMEDOGENIC PRODUCTS

Comedogenic products are products that can clog your pores. They include:

• Coconut oil
• Avocado oil
• Shea butter
• Beeswax
• Sodium laureth sulfate, etc.

The list is endless. They can be used in beauty products so always be conscious of the ingredients in the products you buy.
