How to Prevent Infant Hair Loss
Hair loss in infants is common and should be expected. It is inevitable and there’s not really anything you can do to stop it. The first six months of your baby’s life, there will be serious hair loss. For some, all their hairs will fall out. But no worries, their hair grows back within 6 to 12 months of their lives. The rate at which hair grows back varies from child to child. But the good news is that now your efforts to improve it will actually yield something.
Here are some ways you can prevent hair excessive hair loss in your infant.
Don’t Make Uncomfortable Hairstyles
Tight hairstyles pull at the scalp. And infant scalp is still very tender. So, the smallest strain can cause damage, one that may not be repaired. Whatever style you make for your infant, make sure it is not tight at all.
Comb Only When Necessary
Unless you absolutely have to, avoid combing your child’s hair too often. After the morning brush, leave the hair alone until the next morning when you have to brush again. Excessive combing can trigger hair loss.
Use Mild Shampoo
If it’s not baby-friendly, don’t use it for your child. Use mild shampoo to wash the hair. And don’t wash too often. Don’t use antidandruff shampoo unless there’s dandruff in the hair. Unless prescribed by a doctor, avoid the use of medicated shampoo. Shampoos with harsh chemicals can not only damage the hair but can weaken the scalp too. If care is not taken, you might be setting the hair up for a future where it struggles to grow.
Measure the Oils
Oils are great for your child’s hair if used the right way and with the right amount. Don’t overuse the oils as it can result in dandruff or some other acne-related issues that will eventually lead to hair loss.
Protect from the Sun
If you’re going outside, cover your infant's hair to protect from UV damage.
Leave it Natural
It is best to leave your infant’s hair natural at this point. Chemicals in dyes and relaxers will damage their hair and scalp.
Don’t Use Heat
Avoid using heat tools on your child’s hair. Hot irons and hair dryers will damage the hair and weaken the scalp. And then there’s the fact that there’s only so much heat the tender scalp of an infant can endure.
Don’t Self-Medicate
If you suspect a problem, even if it hasn’t fully materialized, see a specialist. Don’t assume and don’t self-medicate. See a doctor for proper diagnosis and appropriate medication.
Use Soft-Bristled, Wide-Toothed Comb
One way to prevent hair loss is by making sure the hair has enough moisture. Ensure your child drinks water at least 8 times a day. And apply moisturizer to the hair constantly.
