Human Hair Vs Synthetic Hair: Telling the Difference and Choosing the Best

Wigs are great, and women love them. But making the decision between human and synthetic hair can be a battle. If you have to consider the advantages and disadvantages of both wig types, the confusion gets stronger. But, at the end of the day, it is all about what you want. And knowing the difference between both wig types can help you know what you’re looking for and how to make that tough choice.

Synthetic Hair

Technology has so advanced that one may not know a wig is synthetic unless one sees the other counterpart, the human hair. Synthetic hair is man-made. And for that, it is hard to color and impossible to restyle. You can only use it the way it came. Like human hair, synthetic hair is a polymer. It has its fibers built in to protect its curls, color, and waves. It is made with fine, plastic fiber.
Different synthetic hairs are made from different materials such as:

•  Toyokalon – a heat-resistant fiber from China. This one’s easy to style.
•  Kanekalon – Asian fiber that gives synthetic hair its flexibility. Keeps the curls curly for a really long time.
•  Monofilament – woven, linen material used in weaves and are durable.
•  Single filament polyester – are petroleum based and used in less-expensive wigs.
•  Silk – gives the hair its softness and slickness.
•  Silicone - rubber-based material that holds the colors well.
Unlike most other hair types, synthetic hair doesn’t last very long. The highest it lasts is 5 months. They lose their shine and feel much faster. But they are less expensive than other hairs.

•  It is less expensive.
•  Easy to style and maintain.
•  It is readily available.
•  Very many shades of colors and styles to pick from.

•  Doesn’t last very long compared to other hairs.
•  It can’t be restyled or dyed.
•  They shine in excess.

Human Hair

Human hair is gotten from human donors so they are actual human hair. Donors come from different parts of the world: China, India, Indonesia, Eastern Europe, Brazil Caucasia, etc. They are named depending on where they come from. That is: Brazil – Brazilian hair, China – Chinese hair, and so on.

Human hair can be restyled, dyed, and treated pretty much the same way one would treat one’s natural hair. The most common is Brazilian hair because it is readily available. But, Indian hair is also gaining popularity.

The average life span of human hair is 1 year, but it can last up to 3 years if well cared for.

•  Gives you the feel of natural hair.
•  You can use the same styling tools you use for your natural hair to maintain the wig.
•  Can be washed and cleaned in minutes.
•  It can be restyled to one’s unique taste.

•  It is very expensive.
•  Needs frequent styling.
•  It is easily damaged by dyes.
•  It can come off at anytime, even if it seems it is well fixed.
