Major Causes of an Itchy Scalp

There are many signals our body sends us that we sometimes don’t understand. We don’t know where it’s coming. One of those signals is an itchy scalp. An itchy scalp may mean something is wrong inside. If may be a medical reason or just a minor glitch that can be fixed with a remedy. Whatever the reason, all you know your scalp itches, and you want to scratch until it stops. But we all know that once the scratching starts, it is hard to stop.
Knowing the reason why your scalp itches will help you know how to deal with the problem better. Here are some major causes of an itchy scalp:
1. Dirty plus Wet Scalp
Normally, when the hair is dirty, that can cause serious itching. But when the dirt mixes with water, the itch can be annoying. The solution to this is quite simple: wash off the dirt and the itch goes with it.
2. Dandruff
All right, so you have washed off the dirt but it still itches, then something else is at play. The dirt contributed, but it’s not the only culprit. Dandruff is another likely bet. A severe case of dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis which causes more intense itch. To treat it, get over-the-counter products containing salicylic acid and antifungals such as selenium sulfide. If the problem persists, then it is time to see your dermatologist. Your dermatologist can prescribe the perfect remedy or help confirm if something else is causing it.
3. Dry Scalp
With dryness comes itching. Because when the scalp is dry, it is an indication that it has been rid of moisture from the sebum that protects it. Simple solution: apply some moisturizer.
4. Heat
When there’s heat, you sweat. And when your scalp secretes sweats, the bacteria in the sweats can react with whatever they find on the scalp, dirt or hair cream, and cause itching. Solution: wash your hair when you sweat. If you can’t do that, then just use water to rinse out the sweats and dry it.
5. Lice
We’re getting to the complicated part. Head lice are tiny bugs that attach themselves to the body of the hair. Their activities in the hair cause itching. This is a problem that may take more than washing to fix. You may need to get rid of them with an actual insecticide like pyrethrin or permethrin. Shaving off the hair is another easy option.
6. Scabies
Scabies is caused by the human itch mite. They burrow into the upper layer of the skin and deposit their eggs. Scabies don’t only cause itching in the hair, your whole body itches! This condition is rare though. It is only found among people with compromised immune system. So, that may not be your situation. It doesn’t hurt to be sure though.
7. Allergies
The itching might just be a reaction to something you recently put on your scalp. Perhaps a recent hair dye, shampoo, or hair cream that your skin is reacting to. To correct the itch, stick to one product.
