Overcoming Dry Skin: The Place of Moisturizers

H
aving a dry skin can be really irritating and frustrating, isn’t it?The skin naturally produces oil (called sebum) that helps it retain moisture.

We recommend any of these  awesome moisturizers.

How Does the Skin Lose its Moisture?

Your skin becomes dry when it doesn’t retain enough moisture. Moisture can be lost due to frequent or long hours of bathing, making use of harsh soaps to bath, age, or some medical condition. Sometimes, it can be caused by cold or winter because cold winter air means low humidity. And since the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin tends to reflect the level of humidity around it, those weather seasons are a battle! Do you live in a region not all that affected by cold or winter? Well, don’t rejoice yet. Everyone has, at one point or the other, experienced the dissatisfying feel of dry skin.
Fortunately for us, we are not without hope. Skin moisturizers help rehydrate the epidermis of the skin and, hence, help retain moisture. This is possible because they contain the three main types of ingredients that the skin needs to get rehydrated.
Humectants such as ceramides, glycerin, sorbitol, hyaluronic acid, and lecithin which help attract moisture to the skin.
A set of ingredients including petrolatum or petroleum jelly, silicone, lanolin, and mineral oil that help the skin retain moisture.
Emollients like linoleic, linolenic, and lauric acids that help fill up the spaces between the skin cells and smoothens the skin.
There are various other things you can do to make sure your skin doesn’t lose its moisture but using moisturizers is the first step.

Is there any Danger in Having Dry Skin?

Well, not particularly. While dry skin is not necessarily a serious health problem, it can however lead to complications that may become severe if not immediately treated. A dry skin is prone to skin defects such as redness, swelling, and pus which may require the use of antibiotics for treatment. It can also lead to serious complications such as eczema, or excessive bleeding from deep wounds. Needless to say, that a dry skin is more susceptible to injuries.

How Can You Get Moisturizers?

There are many homemade DIY (Do It Yourself) recipes for moisturizers on the internet today. Homemade recipes, however, don’t always have all the ingredients needed to make an effective moisturizer. The idea is that the greasier the moisturizer, the more effective it is. Some moisturizers (like petroleum jelly) don’t contain water so you have to use them while the skin is still damp. Some others contain water and oil which when applied leave more to be desired. Moisturizers containing both oil and water tend to be more cosmetically appealing.
