SHAMPOOING: WHY, WHEN AND HOW

A simple google search will give you a long list of reasons why you should wash your hair often and how often you should wash your hair. In the same sentence, you will be cautioned against washing your hair too much. Finding the balance between too much and too little can be an issue but we will be making it easier by answering a few questions that should guide you.

WHY DO WE NEED TO SHAMPOO?
Shampooing helps rid your hair of the dirt, oil and dead skin cells clogged in it. When done too much, it can also rid your hair of its natural oil. The natural oil, called sebum, which the hair secretes is trapped along with the dirt and is rinsed out with the dirt.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SHAMPOO?
Shampooing poses problems only when it is done too much. So, how often should you wash your hair and when does it become too much? Studies carried out on this subject conclude that there is no law regarding that. It all depends on hair type and texture. For, instance, someone with extra oily hair may need to wash their hair more often than someone with dry hair. For majority, leaving the hair without shampoo for a long time would still be okay. The general rule of thumb is to shampoo at least once weekly.

WHO SHOULD SHAMPOO OFTEN AND WHY?
Another rule of thumb is: the thicker your hair is, the less oily it is. The less oily your hair is, the less you need to shampoo I’m order to avoid ridding your hair of much needed moisture. More oily hair can shampoo often.
Generally, if your hair is visibly oily, scalp is itching or there’s flaking due to dirt, then it is time to shampoo.

The next big question is; what if my hair is styled? If your hair is styled, it would be almost impossible to wash it in between especially with certain styles. Ensure you wash your hair and moisturize thoroughly before making it and speak to your hair stylist on what would work best for the style you choose.
